Sindika Dokolo to Launch African Art Foundation in Europe
BY Nicholas Forrest | June 24, 2015
Congolese-born
businessman and art collector Sindika Dokolo has announced that the Fundação
Sindika Dokolo will set up its first European headquarters in the city of
Porto, Portugal following the success of “You Love Me, You Love Me Not,” an
exhibition devoted to works by contemporary artists from Africa and its
diaspora from the Sindika Dokolo Collection held at the Galeria Municipal
Almeida Garrett in Porto from March 3-May 17, 2015.
The
Fundação Sindika Dokolo was established in Luanda in 2006 to support the
development of African culture while exposing contemporary art in Africa to
Angolans, the rest of the continent, and beyond. The new European headquarters
in Porto will house a dedicated exhibition space and initiate artistic and
educational programs, creating a “natural bridge” between Porto and Luanda that
will support the development of African arts and culture.
Sindika
Dokolo commented, “The foundation is delighted to be establishing a European
outpost in Portugal. The headquarters will act as a creative conduit between
Luanda and Porto including focusing on the cultural exchange within the
international artistic community. This new venture is continuing our efforts in
supporting and promoting the arts of Africa, as well as in widening the global
outreach of our vast collection of classical and contemporary art.”
